Chapter 15

“It’s not as bad as I thought,” Nolan said.

It’s not as bad as he thought? Was he fucking kidding me? If he could see what I saw, he wouldn’t have said that. But I had to conclude he was referring to the way it felt.

“I’m glad one of us is warm-blooded,” I answered. When the wind wasn’t blowing, it felt to be in the mid to upper thirties. But with our thick coats, I doubted either of us would freeze to death. I was worried about getting to our new destination within 48 hours, though. After that, Carl would hunt us down. Tingles ran up my spine at the thought.

Nolan gripped my hand as we stepped away from the house that had imprisoned us for the past week. We had no way of knowing with certainty how long we had been inside, trapped like animals. At least we had a way to track the time now. And we were finally able to see. I say we, because I was Nolan’s eyes. But my vision was still playing catch-up, and the snow was adding to my difficulty focusing.

“I need to get a feel for the landscape, Lyric. What’s around us? Trees? Mountains?”

I dropped his hand and spun around, letting my gaze float around the property and our surroundings. The house we had exited actually didn’t look like a house at all. It was a two-story cement building. Bland. Boring. Everything else was just a cloudy haze.

“Honestly, I don’t know. If there are mountains, the cloud coverage is too low to see them. A few trees are scattered around but—” I glanced down, and that’s when I saw them.

“Hey,” I added. “Carl’s footprints are here!” Just as I said it, the snow began to fall again. Great. The prints would be covered soon. I knelt down to try to guess his shoe size. I don’t know why I thought that would help. But I was pretty sure the cops could identify a shoe type based on the print left from the sole. It looked like nothing more than a standard boot print. But I was certain I could remember it and identify it again, if I had to.

“Let’s follow them,” Nolan said. “They have to lead to tire tracks.”

Keeping my eyes to the ground, I plodded through the deep snow to the other side of the building, following the footprints. If there were tire tracks, we wouldn’t be able to follow them for long.

When I rounded the corner, the dense woods popped into my periphery—the same ones I had seen from the death chamber window. Just beyond the edge of the building the footprints stopped. And in front of them, a set of tracks that wound in a snake-like pattern, all the way down to the trees and disappearing out of sight.

Oddly, they appeared to be much closer together than what I would have expected from a truck.
